Together with development partner Associated British Ports, Siemens Gamesa has invested £310m in a state-of-the-art offshore wind turbine blade manufacture, assembly and servicing facility at Hull’s Alexandra Dock, directly creating over 1,000 new local jobs and many in the supply chain.
Opened in December 2016, the factory initially produced 75m blades which have been used in offshore wind farms off the east coast of the UK including Dudgeon, Beatrice, Triton Knoll and Hornsea One and Two, which is the world’s largest offshore wind farm operated by Orsted and has further remodelled of its production lines to build the 81m blades. They have built over 2500 blades in Hull and are powering 6.7 million homes.
Siemens Gamesa is the leading supplier of offshore wind technology and to meet the need of this flourishing industry they have doubling the size of the factory with a further £186m investment to produce the 108m blades and creating 300 new jobs, the recruitment process is now underway.
The facility also boasts extensive lay down and storage areas and a dedicated 600m deep water quay to serve the offshore energy and marine sectors.
The region is playing a key role in driving down the production costs of the offshore wind sector and maximising the advantages for the UK Industry in clean growth.
