ALE has recently been awarded a £43m contract by Siemens for the supply and deployment of cranes, specialised transport equipment and personnel. Although the contract covers the energy giant’s harbour-based offshore wind sites in the UK and Germany, around 75 per cent of the contract value relates to UK projects, all of which will involve blade export or pre-assembly at Siemens’ new facilities in Hull.
AP Workwear were selected to supply full sets of uniform after ALE identified the company listing in the Green Port Hull Supplier Directory. The entry was part of a package of support AP Workwear received through the Green Port Growth Programme, which is funded by the Regional Growth Fund.
Paula Stead, Director at AP Workwear, explains:
“As we only established the business in 2012, we are a relatively small firm. We have large local competitors, but our size has given us an advantage and the ability to compete, as we offer a bespoke handling service for individual clients and give close attention to detail, with good customer service.
“However, we wanted to grow and specifically win work in the renewables sector. We registered with the Green Port Growth Programme’s Business Support team last year, so they could analyse our company and steer us in the right direction. They identified that, as a small and flexible company, our response times were a real strength and a key marketing factor. The top priority was for us to register on the Green Port Directory, to help advertise our services and products to the wider renewables sector supply chain.”
Fred Mead, Supply Chain Co-Ordinator for the Green Port Growth Programme, referred ALE to the Green Port Hull Directory to help the contractor fulfil its supply chain needs.
“ALE were already aware of the key PPE providers in the area, but was not aware of other local suppliers or the Green Port Supplier Directory. They identified AP Workwear and commissioned them to supply breathable high-visibility clothing and coveralls with personalised logos.
“This is a great example of the benefits the Green Port Hull Supplier Directory can bring to local businesses, regardless of size, who want to capitalise on renewables opportunities in Hull and the East Riding.”
Dave Smith, Projects Operational Manager at ALE, adds:
“With projects across the UK, we often find ourselves looking for local suppliers, which can be a difficult task. It was great to find out about the Green Port Hull Supplier Directory, which pulls together a variety of businesses and is an incredibly useful tool to companies from outside the East Yorkshire area. It made us aware of AP Workwear, who were able to provide us with high-quality PPE at short notice.”
