Nicky Gibson

Having worked in various office-based admin jobs for more than 15 years, Nicky knew she wanted a change.

She went to the WiME careers day in March 2017 to find out if a career change was possible. She enjoyed the chance to speak to women already working in manufacturing and engineering and quickly realised that her relative lack of experience in the field wasn’t a barrier. After a successful interview, she started at Siemens Gamesa in May.

“I felt welcome at the WiME event from the word go. I spoke to women just like me and their encouragement made me feel I can do this, nothing will hold me back.  I was helped to register online which you need to apply for positions at Siemens, so when the Service Operative job came through I was able to apply. After a successful interview, I started my role in May.

“Now I’m working in a really interesting, varied and physical role – one day I might be might be removing waste material from the inside of the cast for the wind turbine blade, another day I might be laying fibreglass on the inside of the structure.

“Any women who don’t feel fulfilled in their role should definitely look into the engineering and manufacturing sector. Do it and don’t look back - I never have!”
